“Treasured Island” 7th-15th oct 2006

-a recent exhibition of sculptures by Michele Petrie and paintings by Maree Mack.

"We share a fervent passion for “Rotto” – its magnificent natural environment, and its relaxed lifestyle.

This has inspired a body of work which attempts an exuberant and unique focus on some of the human influences evident on the island.

The ceramic sculptures employ a colourful and wry perspective in viewing some of the local characters of the island from both above and below the water. They also give the viewer an opportunity to consider some of the environmental issues relating to our interactions with the island and its inhabitants.

The paintings are depictions of familiar island structures viewed through a joyously psychedelic lens.

The exhibition was officially opened by Mr. Wayne Osborn, Managing Director of Alcoa World Alumina Australia, a Director of the Australia Business Arts Foundation and a " fellow Rottnest Is. aficionado",

Michele Petrie and Maree Mack, 2006 .

Rottnest Island is situated 20 kilometres west from the Fremantle coast in Western Australia. It is a unique playground for global visitors because of its beautiful beaches,  coastal scenery and its wildlife both above and below the water. Above the crystalline, impossibly blue water, the quokkas, peacocks, seabirds and osprey are the stars, while below, the corals attract a wide variety of reef fish together with crayfish, rays, and pelagic fish.

It is also renowned for harsh hot summers, strong sea breezes and bays full of boats of all sizes. The absence of private motor vehicles means that the roads are full of cyclists and pedestrians exploring the island at a leisurely pace.
